Junkbox Jury #6

Junkbox Jury #6

Three albums, each for a pound from sales at large chain stores. One of them has actually been in heavy rotation on my iPod.

The Drips‘ debut album “The Drips” was £1 from Zavvi’s big sale recently. From the look of the cover I thought it would be chilled coffee-table grooves along the lines of Bonobo. It’s actually Californian punk. The Drips is a side-project of members of various other bands, including The Bronx, Distillers and Suicidal Tendencies. It turns out that this song is actually called “I’m Gone”. The error is because of the erratic typography on the cover.

The Tuss’s “Rushup Edge” was £1 from Borders Lakeside’s Closing Down Due To Credit Crunch Everything Must Go sale. With a song title like “Death Fuck” you might expect them to be a little more hardcore than average. But it’s actually a fairly avant garde techno-ey thing. The Tuss is rumoured to be an Aphex Twin pseudonym.

Grace was a dance act in the nineties consisting of DJs Paul Oakenfold and Steve Osborne along with various singers and other collaborators. Their big song was “Not Over Yet”, featuring Patti Low, which was reworked by The Klaxons on their Mercury-winning debut album. This, however, is not that band. It’s an entirely different band called Grace. “I Tried It” is the opening track from their 2007 debut album “Detours”, which has been described by some reviewers as “Jaw-droppingly good” and by others as “Flaccid Dadrock-by-numbers.” It was £1 from the same Borders sale.

The track by “The Tuss” has Aphex written all over it.
