Paul Newman 1925-2008

Paul Newman has died at the age of 83. Cool Hand Luke, Cat on a Hit Tin Roof, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and even The Towering Inferno are films that immediately spring to mind. However, even his later, and sparser, work showed his effortless acting, such as The Colour of Money and 2001’s Road to Perdition. Telegraph Obit here.

Some visual memories can be seen here.

Sad news. Undoubtedly his greatest role was in “Hud.” I also liked his salad dressing, and the fact that he donated the profits to worthy causes.

One of those strange coincidences: I was pestering my other half this morning for us to watch Cool Hand Luke tonight (she’s never seen it you see). We get home from town and he’s dead. So it’s definitely Cool Hand Luke tonight.

It’s a real shame - he always seemed like a genuinely good guy. Oooh, and he was gorgeous…

I loved him as Butch Cassidy, and as Henry Gondorff in The Sting. If I was only allowed to watch two films for the rest of my life, it would probably be those, mainly down to his effortless charm. I understand the world of salad dressings has also suffered a loss.

I knew he was ill, and time was short. The Sting was one of the finest films ever made, IMHO. Very beautiful, exquisie, and all done analogue, somehow.

Glad you bothered to post this. A great actor (and sportsman in motor racing) and from all accounts a good man.

He’ll be much missed.

Great actor, great career and definitely one of Hollywood’s good guys (though his salad dressing ain’t all that).

As well as all those mentioned (plus The Hustler), i’d like to give a shout out to his role in the underrrated Hudsucker Proxy.

Newman in Cool Hand Luke defined a kind of manhood for me. What a hero and pretty much the antithesis of modern Hollywood. Nice sauce too.

Has any actor looked finer than Newman as Brick Pollitt in CoaHTR? He very nearly turned me.

Other memorable performances deserving a mention: Left Handed Gun (as Billy the Kid) and Exodus.
