Spotify is what we have been waiting for

Well, it has finally happened.

Spotify
is basically a huge online music service, with pretty much everything I want to listen on it that allows me to listen at will, pause,  and repeat. It is like having the largest MP3 collection in the world.

It has about 200 tracks by the late David Munrow. It has an impressive collection of Smiths covers. It has Rejoice in the Lamb and Turn of the Screw.

Sure, there’s some stuff missing. The Beatles, Led Zepplin and AC/DC haven’t signed up ‘at this time’ to the service. The latest Magnetic Fields album is on there, but not 69 Love Songs. There’s only one track by Spiers and Boden. But these are minor gripes.

There’s also a lovely little feature, which allows you to share playlists with your friends. You can do it online here, too.

It is advertising funded: but the advertisements, which appear in both the browser and between every five or so songs, are not obtrusive. You can opt to pay a tenner a month, and do without the interruption.

Unfortunately, it is in ‘beta’ and so you can’t sign up for it. You have to be invited.

But don’t worry. I have one ‘invitation’ left. I will give it to the first person who asks to be invited, on the condition that you give four of your five invitations to other people who post below, and who are not so quick on the draw.

What do you say?

I’m curious - why go through the rigmarole of only allowing invitations, even if this is ‘beta’?

But I’m game for an invite, if simonh is willing.

I would also be game for an invite, if the lucky winner is so minded

Thank you, David. I’m successfully logged in and it looks great. Unfortunately, Mar and Venichka, it’s telling me that I have no unused invitation tokens, even though i haven’t invited anybody yet. Not sure if this is policy or a glitch but I’ve dropped a line to their customer support and I’ll let you know if I have any success.

Possibly you get them after a few days. Keep your eyes open for them.

Would love one of those invites if there’s any going spare?

No need to wait for an invite, We7 already lets you listen to all the tracks and albums you want for free if you are in the UK. Just go to http://www.we7.com all the music is there now, fully live, dont even need to login and dont need to download an application

Try it, no effort just search click and play

The very kind people at Spotify have provided me with the invitations. Venichka, Mark and fanto, if you could mail me a satlondon@yahoo.co.uk, I will in turn invite you. There is a fourth going spare for whomever might like it…
