Google gifs
A guest post by the Chair-boogle of the Connoisseurs of the Google Gif
One of our more recondite hobbies is the collection of Google gifs where the Google logo is customised to celebrate a famous person’s birthday or to mark a special day, for example, Earth Day.
Here is a small selection from the society’s archives.
St George’s Day. 23 April 2009
At first sight St George looks a bit like a spaceman or one of Dr Who’s cybermen, and the dragon, a Barbified dinosaur. Though closer inspection shows that it is indeed a reworking of the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale where the ‘Other,’ i.e. the dragon, is transformed into an object of affection.
Earth Day. 22 April 2009
April 22, 1970, Earth Day marks the beginning of the modern environmental movement. Approximately 20 million Americans participated, with a goal of a healthy, sustainable environment.
Dr Seuss. 2 March 2009

Giovanni Schiaparelli. 14 March 2009
Giovanni Virginio Schiaparelli was an Italian astronomer and science historian. Among Schiaparelli’s contributions are his telescopic observations of Mars. In his initial observations, he named the “seas” and “continents” of Mars, and later gave rise to much speculation after seeming to discover ‘canals.’

I’m glad someone’s collecting them, it’s occurred to me several times in passing that they’re too good to be lost forever after their 24hrs of glory is up.
Cheap, recession friendly hobby too.

Today’s one (anniversary of Samuel Morse) might be regarded by some as particularly noteworthy

Indeed, Ven.
Unfortunately it has disappeared as I write this, despite it still being Morse’s birthday. I wanted a second look.

The St.George’s Day gif also commemorates Shakespeare’s birthday. St George and the dragon are enacting the balcony from Romeo and Juliet. That’s all.

I found a RAR file full of them when trying to find the ones I needed, they went back around three years are so. There were a few that were on the google home page in the past month that I was unable to save. Not counting that rar file I found I’ve been trying to save them for a few years now, but with out putting the hard drive in that they are all on I cant remember when I started.
