Songs of the Abayudaya

The Abayudaya are a group of Ugandan Jews, who basically declared themselves Jewish to piss of the British.

Norm blogged on these guys a year and a bit ago.

If you have Spotify - and if you live in Europe, there’s not reason not to - you can hear the whole album here.

If you don’t have Spotify, get it here. If you live in the US and understand VPN tunnelling, you can probably also tune in, but don’t quote me on it.

This is great! It reminds me of one Saturday when I was a teenager; a tall African gentlemen turned up to the Synagogue on Friday night dressed in a green velvet suit (with a hat to match). As you can imagine everyone was intrigued, especially when he started praying in Hebrew. As I remember, when asked, all he would say was that he was Jewish but he wouldn’t tell us any more about himself until after Shabbat. He turned up again on Saturday morning, but to all our disappointment he didn’t turn up for the evening service so we never found out his story! I wonder if he had anything to do with the Abayudaya?
