Gene, this goes back to ‘Grindhouse’, and the spoof film trailers in that flop. Robert Rodriguez (‘Mariachi’ etc) did a ‘Mexploitation’ trailer which was so well-received that he decided to turn it into a feature film.
Incidentally, Danny Trejo usually gets cast a thug, because of his somewhat scary appearence. Good to see him as a lead and a hero.
